Hi Everyone,

Welcome to another edition of the WA Turf Industry E-news “On Ground”

Don’t forget that we would love to hear from you if you have a newsworthy story, a yarn, quality photos of jobs well done, movement on the station, case studies, advertorials, events or occasions to share. Please don’t hesitate to send these to our Executive Officer, Eva Ricci at eva.ricci@turfwa.com.au for inclusion in the next edition. We would also appreciate your feedback, and any other input along the way.

Please share this e-news with your teams/employees by onforwarding this digital newsletter. If you prefer though for them to receive the e-news directly, please just send through email addresses and we will ensure that they are included on the list. Don’t hesitate to share your new contact details too, if you move from your current place of employment. These can be shared with Eva at the above email address, and for the STA (WA) also with STA (WA) Treasurer Tony Guy at treasurer@sportsturfwa.asn.au and Andrew Thomson our Memberships Officer at andrew.thomson@spraymow.com.au for STA (WA) members. TGA WA members can contact Eva directly.

Valued industry sponsors, please forward news and adverts to share, to Eva also. We will allocate this according to your sponsorship level as per the magazine advertising agreement. Please refer to your sponsorship benefits here https://www.sportsturfwa.asn.au/sponsorship-information/.

We are looking forward to sharing pertinent, helpful and interesting information with you all into the future. You will be our eyes and ears on the ground, we will be relying on you all out there on the turf, to share news and stories with us, so that we can ensure that the E-news remains interesting and usable. Meanwhile, we will bring to you, local and national news and updates regarding OH&S, biosecurity, government policy and changes, and more with each edition. The Perth Garden Show is coming up in May 2025

Looks like the STA (WA) boat cruise was a big hit. 40 degrees on the day and the STA (WA) mob are staying cool on the river. Lots of happy faces, laughter and camaraderie. This is what our turf community is all about. Lovely to see some partners at this event too. We need to do more of this!

Good on you Brett Sipthorpe for the effort you have put in to organise this event. Thanks to the entire committee for proposing and supporting this free event for our members and sponsors. Chris Langsford , Anthony Guy Rich Gainsford Andrew Thomson and Brett, good on you.

LAWN Project: The University of Western Australia

Lawn as an ecological and cultural phenomenon in Perth: searching for sustainable solutions in times of a drying climate

The project investigates the phenomenon of lawns from environmental (biodiversity), social (perceptions and attitudes), and design perspectives to test alternative sustainable design solutions (including design with native Western Australian plants) for urban green spaces in a drying climate.

The project is based on an integration of landscape design with ecological, biological and social sciences disciplines with direct connection to and the involvement of stakeholders. This project will generate new knowledge on understanding designed urban ecosystems (designed nature), such as lawns, in Australia using empirical data, innovative technologies (e.g. remote sensing), and practical implementations (living labs and demonstration trials).

Project goals:

  • Evaluate existing plant biodiversity, soils and management practices (use of water, mowing, fertilisers and herbicides) of lawns in case study of public spaces (parks and street verges)

  • Identify current social values and preferences of different socio-economic groups toward existing traditional lawns and lawn alternatives that introduce new species, designs and management strategies

  • Develop and test a series of sustainable design and management solutions for water-wise and biodiverse lawns in a drying climate on established demonstration sites (and living labs) in public green spaces (parks, golf courses and university campuses) with community education about new and innovative solutions.

Rich Gainsford and Andrew Thomson from the STA (WA) committee, interviewed the two Sports Turf Graduands nominated by their Turf Lecturers at South Metropolitan TAFE to represent WA at the National Sports Turf Graduates Awards in June in Sydney this year.

We would like to congratulate Nathan Hitch and Lawrence O’Toole for being nominated for this important award. The winner will travel over to the national awards courtesy of TORO Australia.

First interviewed was Nathan Hitch from Scotch College, who is working under Ned Sorrell curating cricket wickets. Nathan works on kikuyu playing surfaces with wintergreen couch cricket wickets. They’re up there with some of the best in WA.

Their second interviewee is Lawrence O’Toole from the City of Rockingham, Lark Hill Sports Complex. Lawrence works with

Couch playing surfaces for cricket, kikuyu for Rugby, soccer, hockey, softball. He also looks after wintergreen couch and saltine cricket wickets.

Both nominees do a stellar job at their workplaces and were nominated due to their good character, and commitment to their occupation.  It’s going to be a difficult decision choosing the winner of the WA Sports Turf Graduate of the year given the high calibre of both nominees.

Both had to present a power point of their time as apprentices and answer a dozen questions about turf management and where they see themselves in the future.

Good luck to you both. The winner will be announced at the upcoming WA Turf Industries Awards evening, on March 26th at the Royal Perth Golf Club.

Nathan Hitch from Scotch College
Lawrence O’Toole from the City of Rockingham
